Pencipta Helikopter Pertama di Indonesia Yum Soemarsono adalah satu-satunya orang Indonesia yang pernah mendisain, membuat, dan menerbangkan helikopter. la berbeda dengan penemu dan pengembang alat transportasi lainnya. Yum Soemarsonio mengembangkan helikopter berdasarkan pengalaman, intuisi, serta ketrampilan yang dimiliki. Rancangan helikopter yang berhasil dibuat adalah Rotor Stabilizer. Yum Soemarsono lahir di Soko, Purworejo, Jawa Tengah pada 10 April 1916, la mulai tertarik dengan pesawat terbang ketika sering melihat pesawat terbang lalu-lalang di Lapangan Terbang Tidar, Magelang. Walaupun dikenal sebagai perancang helikopter, tetapi Yum Soemarsono tidak mengenyam banyak pendidikan tinggi. la menekuni dunia helikopter secara otodidak. Rancangan Helikopter Pertama Helikopter rancangan Yum Soemarsono tidak memiliki bentuk seperti helikopter yang dilihat sekarang. Namun, rancangan tersebut menerapkan prinsip kerja helikopter. Saat itu informasi tentang perkembangan tehnologi helikopter sangat sukar diperoleh. Oleh karena itu, Yum Soemarsono hanya dapat mempelajari sebuah gambar dari majalah bekas Popular Science (1939) dan lembaran stensilan karangan ilmuwan Belanda, Ir. Oyen (1940), Berbekal pengetahuan aerodinamika seadanya, pada 1948 Yum Soemarsono bersama Wiweko Supono dan Nurtanio Pringgoadisuryo berhasil merancang helikopter pertama di Desa Tarikasem, Batujamus (Lereng Gunung Lawu). Rancangan helikopter tersebut diberi nama RI-H. Helikopter RI-H merupakan helikopter pertama yang dihasilkan oleh tangan-tangan trampil orang Indonesia, khususnya anggota TNI AU. Helikopter RI-H dibuat menggunakan mesin sepeda motor BMW 500 cc. Mesin dengan kapasitas 500 cc tersebut dapat menghasilkan tenaga 24 daya kuda pada 3.000 putaran per menit. Rancangan helikopter RI-H pun menjadi kenyataan. Pembuatan Helikopter Pertama Pembuatan helikopter RI-H memerlukan waktu cukup lama. Awal pembuatannya bertepatan dengan peristiwa Madiun pada 16 Oktober 1948. Oleh karena itu, prosentase pembuatan helikopter RI-H baru sekitar 25%.
